This is ridiculous! I am coughing all night. Mucinex DM and Delsum are not helping. So I am trying sudafed today to try to dry things up. Next, I will try Tylenol pm to really dry things up!

I was coughing all night too with a cold recently. I figured a lot of the "tickle" that caused me to cough was due to post-nasal drip, so I took Nyquil every night, and it helped, though it only lasts 6 hours. I didn't want to take another dose when it wore off (and the coughing started back up) because I knew it would keep me sleeping all morning, so I'd take plain cough suppressant when I'd get up in the middle of the night.

I also slept on the couch for about four nights when I was at the worst portion of my cold. We live in a 1BR condo, and the couch is much more comfy for me than my DH because I'm short. I actually slept just fine on it, and my anxiety level was lower b/c I didn't worry about waking him up all night long if I coughed.

Hope you feel better soon! I am still coughing a couple of times a night two weeks later, but not taking any meds, and it's gotta be gone soon, I hope!

My daughter had it before christmas and she is STILL coughing. I had it a few days ago and my cough is nearly cleared up.
I feel so sorry for her.

I have even tried the eucalyptus drops in boiling water. The Nyquil is not touching this and it usually does. I hate medicine!!

And I want to go for a bike ride....

Is it a dry cough or is there mucus? (I really hate the word "mucus." I also hate having it...)

If the m word is involved, and you're otherwise feeling strong, a bike ride might actually help. Before I started taking daily meds for asthma, I used to get bad coughs every time I got a cold. One year as I was recovering from a cold in June-July, I went out for a long bike ride and found that all that heavy breathing worked wonders for clearing my lungs. It was very unladylike and generally gross, but I coughed up lots of stuff, and it helped me get over the cold once and for all.

These days, I focus on decongestants to minimize post nasal drip. I do not like the side effects, especially if I need to take Sudafed, but sometimes it's necessary. I will also sleep sitting up, or semi-sitting-up propped up on lots of pillows.

For a dry cough, if it's really bad I will take a cough suppressant at night. Those drugs leave me loopy for days, so I only take them if they're really necessary.
