Kindle and iPhone owners:

I got a Kindle 4 for Christmas. I also have an iPhone Kindle app. I was led to believe that they can communicate and I can read a book on my iPhone and can pick up where I left off on Kindle. I have the Kindle Cloud or whatever, but that only seems to be for PCs or iPads.

Am I wrong to think that the Kindle or iPhone app can communicate with each other, or am I missing something?

You should be able to do it. I had to play around with the app on my iPhone a little figure out how to load books onto my iPhone. Try looking for something like "archived items" and then you should be able to see the books that you have in your Kindle account. Then you can select which ones you want downloaded to your phone.

I tend to have different books on my phone than on my Kindle, so can't comment on the syncing part of it.

You should be able to sync between the iphone and kindle. You need to be sure that the wireless is turned on the kindle then sync to furthest page read. I use the kindle app on my iphone, ipad and they both sync up with the kindle no problem.

Yep, this. Also make sure that you have a connection. Obviously, if I forget to open my kindle app on my iphone until I'm already in 'airplane mode' then I don't get the advantage of the ability to sync. The same is true if I close the app before we land and then don't open it again. When I go to read on my kindle, it doesn't know that I'd read more on the iphone because the iphone was out of communication the whole time. Don't ask me how I know this...

I have a Kindle and an iPhone. I also have the Kindle app on my laptop.

I'm not under the impression that they communicate directly. (Well, they can each communicate with the laptop, but that's not how Kindle books stay synced.)

When you have wireless (either WiFi or 3G, whichever you use) on, the Kindle will sync with the Amazon server/cloud.

The app in your iPhone also syncs with Amazon when you open the app, provided that you have either WiFi or 3G turned on.

When they both stay in sync with the server, the two devices are also in sync with each other. But it's not direct between them; they both have to be in touch with Amazon.

When you start reading on the Kindle and it's on the wrong page, hit the "Menu" button and choose "Sync to furthest page read." The iPhone will be a little more proactive about checking when you open the app, but you can always hit the little sync icon at the bottom right of the screen to check.

Note that the sync is a little approximate. Usually it lands me within about 2 pages of where I was on the other device, which is OK with me.

If you're going back and forth a lot between devices, get in the habit of syncing the Kindle manually before turning it off. I suspect that it only syncs every 15 minutes or so, in order to conserve battery power. (Someone please correct me if I'm wrong.)
