I know this advice is totally well intentioned, but I think it's worth stating that one should not get a pet just to get through a lonely patch. You should get a pet because you have the desire and the means to give an animal a good forever home.

No need to apologize; I just thought it was a point worth making. I know far too many people who jump into pet ownership because it looks fun. It is, but it's also a big responsibility.
