I was in first grade. Our teacher took us for a walk in the schoolyard until someone noticed that the flag was at half staff. She explained the flags were that way all across the country and why. Then we went back inside to talk about it. Good teacher!

I'm just a little bit younger. We'd only just got our first TV. My very earliest memory is not that day, but a few days later, seeing the funeral on TV. I cried - about the only thing I understood at age four was that it was sad.

    I wasn't.

Interesting question though. My first "where were you when" moment was the resignation of Richard Nixon, which I watched on a TV in Shakey's Pizza with my mom saying "Watch this - it is a big moment."

Me too...for just over another 9 years. My earliest sudden tragic memory was the Challenger disaster. I was in jr high.

Unborn. Not nearly so catastrophic, but the first news story I remember is baby Jessica stuck in the well.

It's 13 years before I was born. Zoom, I was in 2nd grade -and lived in Florida- when the Challenger happened. I think it was a 2nd grade teacher who had been on board? Definitely a shock.

Not born yet for the original question.

I was in 6th Grade when the Challenger disaster happened. Actually was in science class and watching it live on TV. Our science teacher had gotten the TV in the classroom to watch the launch. He had spent the week before teaching mostly about space, NASA and the space program.

Carter is the first POTUS that I remember. I remember people talking about John Lennon getting shot but I didn't know who he was at the time.

I was only 4 yrs. old.

The Kenneday assassination was not important to us....as Canadians. More of a social cultural event, that defined part of a "dream goneif that makes sense.

I was in fifth grade, just turned ten. I remember the principal coming to the door of my classroom, with a very pale face. She must have told my teacher. The teacher told us and everyone gasped. Then we were dismissed about 2 hours early. They were afraid the middle school kids would tell us, when we were walking home, since they got out earlier. I remember sleeping over my friend's house that night, as always, on Fridays and being glued to the TV.
The earliest "event" I remember is the first manned space flight, with Alan Shepard. I was in first grade, maybe second? We had a big clunky TV in the room and got to watch the whole 30 second thing.

Well, my mom was in taking a math test (undergrad) and my dad was in the army, serving in Germany. I've heard their stories, though.

The first big really tragic news story I remember was the Challenger explosion (9th grade). Smaller bad news, Reagan getting shot. But I also have vivid memories of some of the bicentennial celebrations, and for some odd reason, Carter's inauguration!

My brother pointed to the night the Berlin Wall came down as the biggest event that us Gen-Xers should be sure to remember where they were. A lot don't, alas. Of course, not everyone heard stories of it going up that we did-- our Dad was in a military intelligence unit in Berlin then, so he had some tales to tell that aren't in the history books...
