Trek 720

Anyone know anything about Trek 720. A local thrift store has one for sale for $96.00. I looking it up right now, but was wondering if any of you had heard of it, or had any experience with them. I have to measure it and see if it fits so I'm still not sure. I was going to wait until spring (income tax refund) and buy a new bike, but I'm in Florida so biking is a year round thing and actually getting better weatherwise at the moment.

Depends on what year it is and what kind of condition it's in. My DH has a 730 (one step up on components) from about 1997. We have made some changes (different handlebars, etc), but it's still his rainy day commuter bike and very well loved. His is a steel frame/fork. I think some of the more recent ones are aluminum.

I had one of the steel ones from ~1995. It was a boat anchor, but very durable and I loved it.

I agree with Blueberry about age and condition.

If it is the right size, even if you have to replace a few things that could end up being a good bike

Thanks for all your help. I still haven't reached a decision and it would be better to wait until the weekend so that DH can put in his two cents. I have a feeling though that it might be a bit too big for me. If it is still there on Saturday, I will try it out. If it is not, is wasn't meant to be. It was just amazing though to be driving out of the grocery store and see "Trek" on a bicycle in front of the thrift store.

I have a 1997 Trek 730, steel frame. I LOVE this bike. It has such a nice ride to it.

I think the 720 was their top of the line touring bike in the 80s. The 520 is what they have now, but at that time the 520 was the lesser of the two. The 720 is supposed to be a wonderful bike for fully-loaded touring. When DH was looking for an older touring bike, we were hoping he'd find one of those. Alas, at 6'-5", you don't always get the pick of the litter.

I LOVE my 1993 Trek 720 multi-track. I decided to begin cycling this summer and found this bike at a garage sale in July.... first bike in 30 years. The bike was in nice shape considering the age, I have the break cables replaced and a tune up when I first got the bike. I put nearly 1000 miles on this bike so far, since July.......it's been great! Good luck with your bike shopping.

DH and I went back to look at the bike today. The one I thought I wanted was still there. It looked in good shape - tires needed some air but that was to be expected, and a little bit of rust. It was lighter than my current bike. Unfortunately, it was too large for me. The one I thought might work for DH was gone.

Thank you everyone for your comments. Hopefully, this spring I can upgrade.
