Alternating shoes certainly helps. The estimate of how long running shoes last depends on how the shoe is made and the running style of the wearer, but ranges from 200-500 miles or 3-6 months. I don't know about walking shoes. But the best way to know is just to go how they feel and how you feel in general after wearing them. They'll tell you when they're starting to go - maybe your feet won't hurt, but you'll feel a twinge in your knee, or your hip, or your back - something.

I've been wearing the same trail shoes for the past, oh, 11 months? I think I decided today that they're probably close to done, but because they aren't a very squishy shoe to begin with they've lasted longer than most.

These days I'm running in VFF's, so it's different. But when I was in conventional running shoes, I just paid attention to my knees and ankles. When they started getting achy and sore, it was time for a new pair. Well really past time...
