I exercise 5-6 days a week. I've done active things every day before, but I found on my "rest" days I was taking the kids for bike rides (towing over 100lbs). Even if we only rode 3 miles, it was a major toll on my muscles after my hard training I've done during the week.
I make sure to have 1 full rest day. I may play outside with the kids, walk to the park, clean the house top-to-bottom--but it's all low-resistance, mildly aerobic. What I would call "active-rest." And sometimes I soak in the tub, read a book, and take a nap
My general workout schedule looks something like this (Keep in mind I miss an average of 2-3 workouts a week because of kids, work, etc.):
Monday: Easy run, 30-40 minutes & Strength training
Tuesday: Bike Intervals 90-120 minutes & easy run (done at least 5 hours after intervals are completed)
Wednesday: 90 minute road ride, moderate/easy & Strength training
Thursday: Trail Run, 60-90 minutes
Friday: 2-3 hours Hard mountain bike or gravel road ride
Saturday: Rest (hang out with my kids all day)
Sunday: Easy 2 hour ride on the bike path (no hills, easy spin, HR at 110)
. . . I am currently training for a mountain bike race so this is a "peak" training schedule.
