    my first road bike...

I have been riding more and more... I generally ride my Specialized Hardrock, and that is great for trails. Even does well on most of the roads here. When I get on black top however it's REAL slow... and it is wearing down my tires.

I was thinking of getting a Steel road bike shall I use the word "vintage"? although it's not really.... something from 80's or 70's. I was looking for sort of a project bike... I have family that works at bike stores and are bike savy to help if need be.

What I was wondering, is there any brands to keep my eye out for at garage sales and craigslist?? I really know little about road bikes. and I have only been riding my specialized about 6 months now although I have had it over 9 years (double )

    thanks for any input!!

I'd say Raleigh Grand Prix and Schwinn Paramount were really popular at that time, probably good for finding at yard sales now. I don't know a lot about vintage bikes, but I think it's harder to find parts for French bikes, so consider that if you find one that needs a lot of work. Also be aware a vintage bikes can cost as much as a new bike to build, if it needs a lot of parts. I learned this on my vintage Merckx, but it was so worth it. It's a great bike.

    Here's the place to start:

I think the price guide may be outdated, as Sheldon passed away few years ago, but it gives good info about brands.
'02 Eddy Merckx Fuga, Selle An Atomica
'85 Eddy Merckx Professional, Selle An Atomica

'10 Soma Double Cross DC, Selle An Atomica

Thanks, this was what I was looking for! My mom had this bike through out highschool and when I was young.... the schwinn paramount the same yellow color and same decals.

I REALLY wish my dad would not have junked it. He says it was REAL rusted from being stored in a non heated metal building, but I remember it as beautiful as those pictures. I would love to find one like it... even if it needs some TLC
