An interesting note: the Terry Bolero is a top-20 seller this week on the TE site.

    Talking Bolero Review

And it should be! I just bought mine, and it went for its first ride this morning! 50F, I was wearing a sleeveless jersey, bolero, and a wind vest. (And shorts with knickers over them, and toe covers, and a helmet cover that lasted about an hour before I got warmer.) Took off the vest at the halfway point. As it warmed up to 70F, I got warm, but not hot, and my back breathed, and I was able to pull up the sort of loose sleeves of the bolero enough to stay cool. This was a very strenuous ride for me, in a strong wind almost the whole time. (The less sun exposure, the better, too!) Very comfy, didn't ride up in the back- it's like wearing a cozy sweater but not getting too hot! I love it.

oooooo...I can't wait for my "birthday". I borrowed one once and fell in love with it.

***Happy Birthday to me, hurry up and githere quickleee...*** Of course we need sleeveless weather yet. That's a ways off (here anyhow).

I've been checking this out, if any of you are using it in hot weather, let me know how it works. I was thinking of getting something to cover my arms during the summer without having to buy long sleeve jerseys. Wasn't sure if the material was too heavy for hot weather (my "lightweight" armwarmers are sure hot compared to my long sleeve jerseys).

If your lightweight armwarmers are too hot then the Bolero probably will be too. Mine is heavier weight than my plain armwarmers - but keep in mind that my Bolero is several years old so I don't know if it's the same weight fabric as the current version. It is black though - I'd think you'd want a long sleeve in a light-colored fabric (like the armwarmers that Nanci linked to...) if you're going to wear it on hot days.

    Sun Protection

I don't think you could wear the Bolero for sun protection- it's made to be warm, and as Denise says, it's black. There are a few manufacturers of sun protective clothing, though, which could be applicable for cycling.

    For instance:

The Sun Precautions Solumbra Full Zip Cycle Shirt

" You cyclists out there gave us your wish list—and here’s your answer: the Solumbra Full Zip Cycle Shirt. Made to take many hours on the saddle, this sun protective powerhouse features the same Ultra Ventilation System (UVS technology) as our Pullover Cycle Shirt (#1580K05). High contrast white fabric and reflective piping ensure maximum visibility while the three deep back pockets ensure plenty of places to put your gear. It has elastic on the back bottom for coverage and a front hidden zipper pocket to secure keys or ID."

I live in a tropical climate and so far the DeSoto Sports arm coolers that Nanci recommended have been the best thing I've found for protection from the sun and the heat. The material feels like what a thin summer jersey would be made of. I tan a little bit through the fabric, which is ok. I just wish they came in a few more colors!

On Friday I received a TE order which included the Terry Bolero. The inner face of the fabric is brushed, but overall it's fairly lightweight. I haven't decided whether it would be worth keeping, but if I decide to give them a try, I'll let you know how they feel.

What long-sleeved jerseys have you found which have been light enough to wear in hot weather? Long-sleeved, UV blocking, hot weather jerseys are my Holy Grail!

Terry's Peggy Sue Summerweight Jersey seems to fit the bill, but the print is really not my style. So I ordered two models by Cannondale: the Competition Lightweight Jersey for fall and the Summer-weight Solar Jersey with UPF sun protection.

I wore the Competition Jersey yesterday on a long late-morning ride. I felt like it kept me pretty cool, but when I got home I realized that I tanned right through the fabric. Of course, this is much better than getting my forearms sunburned (which is what happened *last* weekend when I wore a short-sleeved jersey), but I was expecting a bit more sun protection. As for the Solar Jersey, I'm not sure I'll even keep it because in addition to having only a single zippered pocket, the fabric is white and somewhat see-through.

Please let me know what you've found that works!

    Cari

Were you going to wear the Bolero for sun protection?? You're in a tough climate, like I am, because of the humidity.

I think that Peggy Sue Jersey looks like the best bet if it really is cool. I've thought the same about the pattern, though I _could_ live with it. I wonder who they think that appeals to?

The Sun Precautions jersey would be cool to try. That's the clothing that everybody wears at the Badwater Marathon in Death Valley- 130 miles, temps over 110.

The only two places I've had precancerous cells removed were from the top of my nose, and my forearm...(And I'm a pretty faithful sunscreen user, my whole life.)

I did a search and the Sun Precautions athletic jersey might do the trick. There is also the coolibar sight has some and in different colors. www.coolibar.com The arm sleeves at Trisports look good, but I really wonder how cool they are. Someone needs to make a Bolero with the same material. That way you get your arms and shoulders covered.

Thanks Nanci, Denise and Cari for info. on the lightweight arm sleeves. I haven't seen these at the LBS, but would like to try them out. So on-line purchase here I come!

As far as long sleeve jersey for the summer, I bought two Terry sunblock jerseys a few years ago (white). They've worked well, but I really like to wear t-shirt like jerseys (no band on the waist), that's why the bolero appealed to me and now the arm sleeves. But the Terry jerseys have worked at blocking and I have been pleased, unfortunately they don't seem to have this old model anymore.

    Enjoy!

    Snowtulip,

You might also want to look at these by Defeet. http://www.teamestrogen.com/products.asp?pID=16693 Very lightweight and we sell lots of them. Plus they have the advantage of being white, so they don't absorb the heat. We also *just* received our first shipment of the DeSoto summerwight armskins that was mentioned in an earlier post. Our photography dept is a wee bit backed up though, so they probably won't be online for a week or so.

    Hope this helps!

I'd never heard of the Bolero until this thread, and I'm amazed! What an awesome product idea - especially to wear over a strappy tank/halter!

    Awaiting my TE order now.

I love mine- wear it all the time. Will wear it to start out in the freezing cold low 60's tomorrow morning!

Why doesn't TE have a print catalog? That's how you fall in love with things...

I look at what's new under the products list pretty much every day. You never know when something you just gotta have will show up.
