Nice! Glad you found a comfortable route! For the most part, I like the Old Hwy, cuz' it is scenic and the shade and waterfalls are nice on the hot days.

We drove out to Multnomah waterfall yesterday via Old Scenic Hwy. Along the way, we stopped at Latourell and Bridal Veil fall, Women's Forum, and Crown Point Scenic Viewpoint. Road was really narrow at times with NO shoulder but the cars were traveling at reasonable speed so that helps if you are a cyclist. We did see quite a number of riders with paniers and such.
If I were to do this ride, I think it would be on a weekday when there is much less traffic. Roundtrip to Multnomah fall was around 30 miles. The scary part of the road was from Bridal Veil fall to Multnomah fall. I-84 exit at Bridal Veil dumped a lot of impatient drivers onto the Scenic Hwy and that was bit un-nerving.
I ride the Scenic Hwy fairly often and never have any issues. A holiday weekend (like this weekend) can be a little traffic heavy, but speeds are low, so it's never been a problem.
