It isn't called the electric thingy? What is it called?

For some reason all I could come up with were industrial units. I am just going to get a "hot pot", once you toss in next-day shipping for the immersion heater I will pay more than for the hot pot. Yeah, that is what I get for waiting until the last minute but time got away from me

I did call Ace Hardware and a couple of other local stores who sell it via Amazon, but they don't keep them in stock. One manager said he could have it for me....3 days after my return In the end, the hot pot might be more versatile...

They do the job OK, tiny problem is that they make the mug hot but hey, at least it's an easy way to make a hot drink.

Or go to the camp store at the campground and buy a cup (or a thermos) of coffee. Or the nearest fast food place, gas station, convenience store. How long do those immersion heaters take to boil water anyway?

Withim, I just saw your post - the coffee at the camp store is AWFUL...I will go with the hot pot to get the water hot enough for my coffee press

hmmm French Press at a campground? Been there done that. It's kind of messy to clean up.

First thing I do is heat a pot of water on the camp stove. I use my old Melita filter holder set over top an old fashioned aluminum camp style percolator (guts removed), and pour the boiling water into that. Once the coffee is made, swish some of the remaining boiling water into a thermos bottle to warm it, pour it back into the pot (save for dishwashing) then decant the coffee into the thermos bottle to keep it hot for as long as it's in there. A 2nd thermos is useful for hot water - you can use to wash your face, freshen up a little after bike ride, or wash the dishes.

Agree with Withm. I have used an unbreakable French press when camping, but the method she describes is easier and makes good coffee.

+1 on the extra thermos if space allows.

Plus you're not stuck with instant coffee. Use a Melitta drip cone. That way you can have your coffee at non-electric campsites, too.

Just either grind your coffee before you go to a non-electric campsite or find a hand-cranked grinder. Mortar and pestle don't work that well on coffee beans, especially before you've had your coffee. DAMHIK

I will take my less expensive french coffee press...it isn't that expensive if I should break it. Since I am car camping, I am not all that worried about weight.

Have you tried drug stores and grocery stores? I bought one some time back and don't recall having trouble finding it.

Yes, no one locally appears to carry them any longer - I've been told they don't sell enough of them these days. I've decided to go the hot pot direction anyway

Withim, that certainly sounds like a better approach than my coffee press, and less fragile
