Brake cables

I have an old bike here with road caliper brakes, but the wrong brake levers (Shimano V-brake levers).
I got fitting levers for the caliper brakes. Now I wonder, is there a difference between the cables for V-brakes or Caliper brakes too? Do I have to change the cables, or is it enough to exchange the levers?
The set came with new cables and housing, so it would just be some extra work, I wouldn't have to buy new cables.

Cables need to match the levers - but not the style of brakes. Road brake levers use one type of cable end, and mountain levers use a different end.
