I often cycle in NYC and have a phobia about cycling up ramps; it's a combination of the tight spaces and going downhill with other cyclists around and pedestrians. I'm generally nervous in tight spaces. I'd love to get over this phobia, but when I (rarely) approach ramps, I chicken out and walk.

It's good to get off and walk when you feel unsafe. Do what makes you safe and comfortable! Over time, your skills will improve and you'll adjust to new inner safety limits.![]()

It's fine. I often do it now, too, because of falling on a piece of wet concrete and nearly falling due to the same problem a few days before. The way the ramps are, you can't see what is ahead of you before you go under a street and it is often wet without warning.
Don't feel bad about it. I don't. I just know that I am safer that way.

If you are so uncomfortable that you feel the need to "save face" as you walk, do what I do: pull out your water bottle and take a swig, then stroll along with the bottle in your hand... a fine "I meant to do that!"
Yeah, I'm just casually strolling along because I am admiring the view and I needed a drink, and my, don't you look sexy on that hot bike as you pass me! Have a nice day!
