first hot ride of the season

Today was our first 100 degree day this year (I think).

There's heat and then there's humidity~Texas style. Ack! That's too hot!

I don't envy you guys in the South! Last May I went to New Orleans for my first trip that was anywhere south of Connecticut. After that experience I really shouldn't complain about New England summers anymore. I don't think I've experienced heat and humidity like that in New Orleans at any other point in my life, and that was only May!

Kudos to you Southern ladies who manage to keep it up all summer. I don't think I could do it.

I caved...they raised the forecast high to 95, and I decided (after eating dinner outside last night and burning up) that I'd rather take a pass on a ride after work tonight and just run on the treadmill at lunchtime instead. I'm just not acclimated to the heat yet since it came on very suddenly - not long ago at all, I was still wearing a jacket or armwarmers on some rides.

As it turns out, it didn't quite reach the high, and by the time I would have been riding it was down to 90, so I probably would have done fine riding. Never fails with our weather forecasters here! But, there will be time for plenty more rides later, and I did get a good workout, even on the treadmill.

I plan to ride Sat-Sun-Mon so will make up for skipping tonight, and it's supposed to be cooler each of those days than today.

It's supposed to start hitting 90 this weekend. Ugh. Will be going out Saturday morning at some ridiculous hour to get my ride in.

In my opinion, the heat here in Texas is easier to deal with because it is so consistent. Growing up in Ohio, I recall having heat waves that would get to be just as hot as it does here in Texas, but would only last for a week or so. We weren't used to the heat and it was miserable.

Here in Austin, it just gets hot and stays hot. I'm unwilling to spend the entire summer indoors, so I sucked it up, took things slow, and gradually acclimated to our hot summers. When I moved here, I couldn't go running after sunup, but these days I just sort of academically note that it's hot out, and after that I don't really notice it.

You really do get used to it. I do much better with hot-weather rides in July and August than I do in May. Eventually it's just hot here every day, even in the morning, so it starts feeling pretty much normal. But we had a fairly cool springtime here, so I am not used to rides when it's over the low 80s just yet.
