So I have a random question for you: how do steel cut oats differ in taste from, say, quaker oats? And how do you cook them? I was at the store the other day and stopped by the bulk bin section and saw steel cut oats (they look very strange). It said to cook them for 90 minutes.

Egads, man- I don't have that kind of time.
How do YOU cook them?
My DH cooks them either in a slow-cooker overnight or on the stove. I don't think it takes 90 minutes even on the stove. Try doing a search as there have been a couple threads all about oatmeal and cooking steel-cut oats here. Lots of good tips. Steel-cut are SO much better than regular rolled oats, with a great, chewy texture. I highly recommend them.
It's now officially gotten too hot for oatmeal here in NC -- upper 80s today! Cold cereal only for me from here on out!
