Well done for entering the sportive! Thats the best way to do it, no turning back now....
Its not just the distance, but the time in the saddle. 76 miles means at least four or five hours on the bike, so build up to that gradually. Increase the mileage each time you go out, even if it's only a couple of miles. But hey, I'm no expert, I'm sure there are plenty of people on here far more experienced in such matters!
I found that pushing myself outside of my 'comfort zone' wasn't as bad as I thought, the first time you complete a 25 mile ride you will feel great, and it really wont be that bad! Train with a cycling buddy as well if you can, it always makes the miles seem shorter!!
And most importantly, drink plenty of fluids on the ride, eat lots of carbs the night before, and have a good breakfast before you set off, muesli or similar, not a fry-up! And don't forget to take some food with you, bananas are always good, malt loaf, flapjacks, that kind of thing. Think of your body as an engine, it will only go well if you put the right fuel in it!
