I am looking forward to becoming more "car-light" when I move and start my new job in Maine. Right now I am working in a bunch of different places, some of which are 45 minutes drive from my house, and I am not happy with how much driving I have been doing as a result. A lot of roads here also are just not safe to ride on. In looking for a place to live when I move, my goal is to be within 15 minutes or less driving distance to work (for when I do have to drive because of weather etc.) which will automatically be a reasonable biking distance. The town where I will be working also has all the basic shopping etc. for routine errands, and I think the roads/traffic will be much more bike-friendly in general than here. I don't think car-free would ever be realistic for me--the major reason is the need to get to work in winter weather (assuming I don't end up with a place that is within walking distance) and another is that I just think it's too limiting. However, I certainly am looking forward to reducing my driving soon.
