Guys & hand lotion

My best friend is a guy and not only does he love lotions, he loves fruity-smelling body washes.

Ha, this is totally Derek! He is a The Body Shop body butter addict! Doesn't matter the fragrance, he loves them all, but I think he definitely prefers the fruity/sweet ones. He gets really bad eczema that flares up when the air is so dry from central heating (even with a console humidifier), so we go through lotion and body butters pretty fast this time of the year.

He's a mechanical Engineer...

Lol. My husband too. He's a Well driller! And on top of the fruity-lotions, he likes smelly candles too. My parents get him yankee candles every year for Christmas.

Ha, a couple of years ago my mom got my hubby a little 3 bottle set of body sprays as a joke. I remember one of the scents was frosted cupcake. He LOVED those things!

I love it when guys are secure enough in their manhood to not shun stuff that smells really good.

I guess I thought it was normal for anyone to use lotion for dry skin or sun screen or to smell good or whatever, even in hopes of eternal youth. I'm sure everyone has preferences too.

My husband will only use unscented facial moisturizer. Even floral fragrances that come from the active ingredients are too much for him. It's possible he might use a more "masculine" fragrance, but those aren't the ones I shop for myself and test out for him. His skin is even more sensitive than mine, which I hardly thought possible - I can't tell you how many moisturizers I've bought but couldn't use, including a lot of so-called "organic" and "sensitive skin" formulas.

I don't understand what might be considered unusual about it, though ....

I can't imagine what the big deal is about this. My DH uses both body and face moisturizers as needed. His dislike of unscented stuff is about like mine: neither of us can stand the smelly stuff.
Right now he is using an anti aging deep wrinkle cream/moisturizer I bought that was too harsh for my skin.
We both use sunscreen religiously, although DH did not when we first met. But that was 30+ years ago. Live in a desert climate and you get first hand knowledge of what the sun can do to your skin, even way back then...

My husband uses more moisturizers and sunscreen than I do. He's got fair, dry skin and mine is olive-toned and oily. I never once thought about the masculinity of it at all. Hell, he uses a pouf and a body wash in the shower too...I use my hands and regular old soap! Go figure.

I wondered why raise the question as well. I wonder if it could be a US/Canada cultural difference?

I'm a guy and I use hand lotion and sunscreen and lots of it. However, nothing scented.

I've researched lotion and moisturizers quite a bit and my wife and I are in disagreement. Based on what I've read...ANY moisturizer that lists water as the first ingredient will not do much for you in the long run, as it only evaporates and just sets up a cycle of having to use more.

So only petroleum or lanolin based lotions really make much of a difference in the long run.

My wife disagrees but I think it is primarily because she likes the way certain lotions feel (and smell) after she applies them.

Right now, I use plain old petroleum jelly before going to bed and I think the results are pretty good. Any opinions?

petroleum jelly - yuck. Sorry, I know it works, but the thought of using some gasoline derivative on your skin, which is an organ, just makes my skin crawl.

I used pure lanolin before, and I just couldn't get past the smell. It just smelled of... well... sheep or farmyard.

I try to use all natural products, but even pure shea butter doesn't seem to take care of the severe dry skin I seem to get in the winters these days. I found urea works very well; I found one that doesn't contain parabens and other chemicals.

ha ha, I was being polite, I was telling people around me it smelled of a euphemism for donkey!

truthfully, I'm not sure what a sheep smells like, let alone a wet one (though my merino wool stuff sure smells funky/odd when they're wet)
