I don't know exactly how you define slow. All I know is I'm always slower than everyone I ride with. Especially on hills. 5 - 8 mph on hills is about my average. I'd say I average anywhere from 12 - 15 mph on the flats without a tail or headwind. Does that help?

I think we're about the same speed. I can go a little faster on the flats but not always sustained (depends on how I feel that day). My speed on hills is essentially the same as yours though I know I'm getting faster. It used to be I'd have to stop on overpasses.
Now I'm able to stand and power through them which definately used to not be the case.
What I still worry about are inclines, even slight ones. Let's face it, I suck *sigh* Oh well. 
It probably will actually help you pace yourself. From spin class, you most likely already know your HR comfort zone & limits. So you can use the HRM to know when you need to slow it a bit, or perhaps pick up the pace. I'd wear it if I were you.
