I just bought a Trek Madone 5.1 myself. I felt stretched out on mine too. The guy who sold me the bike said he wanted to raise the handlebars rather than shortening the stem. I haven't ridden it enough to figure out the fit too much, but I did slide my seat as far forward as I could so make it shorter reach to the bars. Good luck with your bike!
