Lake Superior State University 2011 Banished Words List

    To disable ads, please log-in.

The "back story" on LSSU's popular list began on Jan. 1, 1976, when former LSSU Public Relations Director Bill Rabe and a group of friends each contributed a few expressions that they disliked to form the first list. After that, the nominations stacked up for future lists and Rabe's group, known then as The Unicorn Hunters, didn't have to make up its own list again. LSSU receives well over 1,000 nominations annually through its website, lssu.edu/banished.

And now, here's a look at the 2011 list. Get ready for the "wow factor!" It's full of "epic" "a-ha moments" that are sure to "viral." It's a no-"fail" list that you'll be "facebooking" and "googling" with your "BFFs." "Just sayin'."

I admit I do use "Google" as a verb....

How many of these are you "guilty" of?

I use Google as a verb too. And epic, but in jest. Because Rapha uses it all the time and I find it amusing.

Some of their words just "work". I wish they'd offer alternatives

"Google", and "epic" (if in the company of people who use it).
At least I don't leave slime trails.

I still love fail. It's very useful with a 9 year old boy, husband, and 4 cats. "Fail" is something that happens a lot around here.

I use "google" as a verb all of the time. I like it.
I also use "fail" and "epic fail".

They should have put in using "disrespect" as a verb. It makes my teeth hurt (because I'm grinding them together) when I hear someone on the news say that X disrespected Y. Aaargh! X treated Y disrespectfully.

I have a colleague who uses "trial" as a verb. "We're going to trial this device with (kid's name). Does it really sound more important than simply "to try the device?" Obviously she isn't "conducting a trial" of the device, because that would imply some structure and experimental rigor.

    Ditto that!

I google things. Come to think of it, I don't "dogpile" things though.

The only word I am guilty of using is "man up"... it's has for a long time been one of my favorites... it goes with "quit your whining" or "No whiners allowed". I also like "walk it off" and "suck it up". Obviously most of these are said after a bike crash.

Because I am old school, I never got into the habit of saying "I googled that person..." I always say "I checked on Google" or "I looked him up on Yahoo".

And I would love to see "disrespect" in that list. I cringe when someone whines "she disrepected me!". No wonder, speak properly!

Not a word, but a phrase:
    Now, more than ever.....

It's enough to make me ill.
