Has anyone used any of the third party apps that are supposed to convert .epub documents to a format that the Kindle can read?

There is some information here, and here. Both links are from 2010, apparently there have been unofficial approaches to this since at least 2008 - the oldest link that I found. I've been told that the method on the first link works pretty well by a friend who uses the Kindle. We were discussing this just the other day as I was debating the Sony Reader vs the Kindle...
