    My trepidation about the Brooks is the cost. Yeah, I know I can order one with a very nice return policy, but the cost is equivalent to half a month's rent.

    I need to find a less expensive hobby.

    that is a very understandable reason.
    i hope someone posts who knows something more affordable. i know there are brooks knock offs but not sure any of them have cutouts. velo orange has knock offs but not much cheaper and no cut outs so that probably won't work. not even sure any are wide enough anyway.

    Specialized makes a Dolce Sport saddle in 175. It is fairly padded, so it may not work for you. It does have a cutout. It costs around $55. I have it on my Crosstrail and it works fine. I have thought about it on a road bike, but haven't take the plunge yet.
