I like steel. You might take a look at what Jamis has to offer in the way of steel bikes. I just bought an Aurora for about $950. Now it's a touring bike, but it wouldn't be contrary to your goals. Of course they have other models, too.

I'm just waiting around for spring - thinking about buying myself a new bike. Clothing and accessories to buy. Right now I have a Giant OCR 3 - would like to spend no more than $1,200 any recommendations? Maybe steel? I want to buy some shorts - from what I've read here, don't buy cheap. What about jerseys? I did just purchase a Garmin 305 - probably get the bike mount now. My biking goals are exercise/fitness, maybe a century. Thanks

Live with intention. Walk to the edge. Listen hard. Practice wellness. Play with abandon. Laugh. Choose with no regret. Continue to learn. Appreciate your friends. Do what you love. Live as if this is all there is.

2+ on Jamis. You get a lot of bike for the money.
