Holiday Gift Ideas

Hello, friends,

Last year I got a great tip on the Park Tools Barbecue Tool Set for my husband. I'm hoping to get some ideas this year, too.

Since taking up cycling, he's lost over 60 pounds and is now having trouble finding jerseys that fit well. He likes PI's racer fit, I think - the one that dips down in the back and fits snug. He's got a large, but he's complaining about it flapping in the wind when he's in the drops and riding fast. He's also very tall. Anyone know what Andy Schleck wears? Seriously, tall and slender.

Any other ideas about great cycling-themed gifts? He's got almost every tool you could need to open a bike shop. I'm not sure what to get him. What are you all getting for your significant others this year?

New tires and tubes are always nice.
Does he a have a good light in case his ride goes late and he gets caught at dusk?

I think I'm gonna have to go with food-related stuff. He's got everything he could possibly need gear-wise for every sport he's ever liked. And what needs replaced he's so attached to that it would be an insult for me to try. I gave up after one gift-giving holiday with this one.

For work, I'm planning to give something to each classroom (that they can use with the kids) rather than give a mountain of tiny crappy items to the staff. This year I have 8 classrooms and each room has 5-6 staff.

For the rest of the staff, I'll bring tangerines or something. And I turn all the fundraiser food right around and give that back to the staff too, because I don't want to eat it. Except for the Girl Scout cookies. There is one cookie dough fundraiser that the dough resembles a polymer--Fimo clay or something, not food.

We have a new principal this year and he asked me what past principals have given to staff members. Seriously, I am not a good person to ask - I don't need more stuff and the little trinkets they give us tend to go right into the garbage. I told him the best present was to take my recess duty one day.

I don't know what I'm going to get Thom. I told him I wanted some fancy wheels for my Cervelo. He just laughed. Now the Cervelo, was an awesome just because present from him that I got in March for no reason other than he loves me.

We're going to be in Maine for the holidays. And I'm not carting presents across the country and back.

I think the best work gift I ever got was a package of 4 "Holiday Spices," spice jars of cinnamon, ginger, clove & nutmeg. I used them right up!

That Park bike shop stool is pretty neat.

I found some men's medium tall bike jerseys on Amazon. Go figure. You really can buy anything there.

What about custom bike frame decals w/ his name on them, like the pros have? I think somewhere you can even get them with a little flag for the country of your choice.

(You'd have to do some research. A friend did this for her son when he got his first road bike, but I never found out where she got them.)

My partner cycles alot also (he got me into returning to cycling..about 18 yrs. ago ). I plan to get him a high viz cycling, sleevless vest with a slightly thicker front and the requisite zippered pockets that he requires.

It's a sort of garment for layering in cooler weather or for transitional seasons ..or for areas like California at this time of year.

Or a closer-fitting fleecy or cycling jacket to layer underneath. I'm sure with his weight loss he could use another one. He doesn't have to do laundry as often...

I most definitely would not be buying his prime winter cycling jacket which I know he's hunting down one right now. Usually he and I are each very picky and particular for our respective primary, more expensive outer cycling jacket that would be worn daily. Nor do I buy him any gloves..too risky because a person's hand shape may not jive with the way how the glove is designed. As we know, every little irritating wrinkle /scratchiness in ill-fitting key clothing pieces, get to be real pain when cycling for many hrs. on bike.
