    Bike Safety Awareness Survey

    To disable ads, please log-in.

I am a student from the University of Houston as well as an avid cyclist. I am conducting a survey to study the connection between a cyclist's experience, background, and current life stage with their bike safety awareness and practices. I would greatly appreciate the participation of any and every individual willing. The survey will be available until December 5th. Thank you for your time and contribution to my studies. Please continue to the link below for my short survey.

took the survey and the one thing that struck me was while you inquired about accidents both on bike and with auto, you did not list possible causes- In my case, while I have had two accidents involving personal injury, in both cases it was because I was brushed by a driver, either passing too close or running into me. In both cases there was nothing I could do about it since the one car brushed me by swinging wide out of a left turn, and the other ran over me because his foot "slipped" while stopped at a light.

By "car accidents" do you mean car-bicycle collisions, or car-car collisions where I was a driver or passenger?

I answered as if it was car-car collisions.

I think the tickets/citations questions should be clarified to moving violations, if that's what you're trying to look at. As in, I received a ticket for an outdated state inspection sticker b/c the cops were at a tollbooth ambushing people. But I have never in my life received a ticket b/c of my driving.

    Good luck with your project!

I'm sure I'm not the only one who would be interested in what you learn.

I like that I got to respond that I was a regular bike rider younger than age 21 and I got to ignore that I hardly even sat on a bike between age 29 and 40. I guess it''s true though, that you never forget how.

I liked that, too. I learned when I was probably 5 or 6, but didn't ride much from about 12-36. My 2nd life of biking has been fabulous, though--makes up for 24 years off-saddle.

I thought the same as marni - you should also ask about the cause/fault in the accidents.... In your time period I've had one bike accident that was not my fault - left hooked when I was going straight on a green - in broad daylight... No auto accidents in your time period, but the last one that I was in, I was rear ended while I was at a stop at a red light... not much I could do about that one....

dms... can save all the other questions for his or her NEXT research project. Or better yet for his or her students' projects after he or she is happily sitting on the faculty someplace.
