I've been watching these waterproof backpacks in Costco. They're currently clearanced at $14.97:

Basically, similar to a drybag with straps on the back - similar to ortlieb's stuff as well.
I bought 2 of them, and am planning on making poor woman's waterproof panniers out of them. The webbing at the top of the backpack harness will be easy enough to modify into strapping to a rack - and the waist part at the bottom to strap the bottom to the rack. I'll probably leave the backpack straps on to use to carry them when I take them off the rack - but if you wanted to save weight you could cut it off (these come out about 2 lbs heavier than the ortlieb back rollers, a little bigger and like $120 cheaper)
Anyways - just in case one of you wanted to try your hand at pannier making or would just like a waterproof backpack for commuting, these look pretty promising to me.

No, I just never could bring myself to pay ortlieb prices for a glorified dry bag.
This saves me from taking one of my kayaking drybags and trying to fuse webbing or something on it.
Sorry I didn't manage to make it to bike with you two - the bike build was giving me problems that I didn't want to rush the solution to and I didn't have another bike that I thought I could ride that long on uneven surface.
Man- those are GREAT! We don't have a Costco in the the state, but if we did... I've always wanted Ortleibs, but like you, cannot justify the price. I woudl snap those up in a heartbeat!

If I was doing a cross country trip where weight was at a premium, I'd think about the ortliebs. But I'm not going to be doing that any time soon. These will more than work for now, and if they don't, they're not bad backpacks. Maybe I'll go canyoneering sometime or something![]()
REI has Ortliebs on sale right now...25% off. If we hadn't just bought cross country skis....
Don't mind me...I'm just enabling![]()
I know. They're still $130 in the saleDid I mention glorified dry bags?
