If you rent...get something REALLY nice. Like a Zipp 303. May as well take the opportunity to know what the fuss is all about. If your LBS does not have this service... try racedaywheels.com
Fair warning...you will never be satisfied with cheap wheels again.

I ended buying a set of Aksiums. The rental scared me: they only rented very nice wheels ($900 and up) and you get charged a refundable deposit for the full value of the wheels. I was driving for more than 4 hours to the Hilly Hundred, bike on roof rack, and thought... with my luck... better buy my own wheels! I will try the fancy wheels on weekend closer to home.

Have you thought about a good set of handbuilt wheels?

That would be nice for my new bike -- I'm currently looking for a bike. Once I get a bike that fits me and I can enjoy, I will ask for recommendations about what to look for in wheels.
