I almost ran over a (live) chipmunk today. He ran right in front of me. Happily, he ran fast enough to avoid my wheel.

I was once riding in a charity ride cruising along about 25 feet behind the tail of a 5 person line. I was close enough to hear the following: "road kill right," "mindroad kill right", " road kill", "road kill" "OH ****!". I swerved a bit wider than I had planned just to be safe.

A few days ago I rode over al really dead and smashed flat snake. It didn't register until I was a few yards past it and realized that it wasn't a piece of plastic or rubber. Better than last year when I ran over a live snake with my vehicle. I heard a thump-thump-thump and pulled over to look and there as a 4 foot snake wrapped around my wheel. He was dead by then but part of him was whacking up against my wheel well. I was at a park and stopped to look it over and a ranger stopped up along side thinking I was having car trouble because I was bent over the car and he identifed it as a blue racer. ICK!

I rummaged around in the brush and found a stick to try to get him off my wheel. It was really gross and icky and creeped me out for the rest of the day.

Last week I was riding a meandering road through a residential area. I wasn't paying much attention to the road surface. Suddenly I noticed that I had just barely missed "something" as that "something" passed beneath my right pedal. My mind's first reaction was "Why did somone dump some chili on the road?" Then I noticed the bushy squirrel tail. I did not go back to look.

I am cracking up. Poor bunny.

Did any of you ever see that Michelin tire commercial where all these poor cartoon forest creatures were getting run over because cars couldn't stop fast enough with their non-Michelin tires? The animals were alive but they were smooshed and had tire tracks on them. It was so horrifying and awful that it was funny. I'm sure it's on YouTube someplace.

I swear the squirrels around here have taken suicide pact! Its only a matter of time before I nail one especially now that its acorn season. I see at least one a day that's been hit by a cyclist. They see a bike its " hey instead of going for that nut on the other side of the path I think I'll panic in the middle of the road and zip back and forth until maybe she hits me!"

My riding buddy and I have taken to yelling GOOOOOO at them from afar.

I talk to them as well, and to deer. There have been times where groups of deer have crossed the road in front of me, then the last one turns around and goes back because she forgot something. Or just wanted to give me an adrenalin rush...

Indeed, sorry about the bunny - though glad to hear it was dead already...
