is there a way to avoid bee stings while on a bike?

Not even pro riders can escape the fury of bees. In the Vuelta a España, Joaquim Rodriguez, was stung by a bee today, close to one of his eyes. Apparently he could hardly see the finish line:

i got stung again

i had stopped for just a moment and heard a sound felt something looked down and saw a stinger siting out of the lower part of my arm that was not covered by jersey.

on the bright side my reaction seems to be very minor for once so maybe i am getting less sensitive to bees!

no idea why they are attracted to me i do not wear any perfume i wash my hair not very often and with baking soda and vinegar and i use very mild olive oil soap that is unscented. i had no sunscreen or anything on and there where not even many bees around today because it was overcast with a light drizzle not really rain but damp.

the bee sting was a minor event. i got chased by dogs for the first time and that was scary and a big white van nearly forced me off the road in a place where there was no ditch just a wall to go into. that was pretty scary.

really i am in a good mood considering but it was a bit of a disappointing day as far as bike rides go.

Moonfroggy, I am sorry to read you were stung again and the other two things happened. That is scary stuff and very glad that you are ok, for sure. Hopefully your next ride will be more relaxing!

Learned this trick from my brother-in-law and I've tried it: If you can put bleach (Clorox) on the sting immediately after it happens, it won't sting or hurt at all. It has to be within the first few minutes though.

I almost got stung today and told hubby that we needed to put a tiny bit of bleach in a bottle in a ziplock and carry in our bike bag.

wow i never would have thought of that. we don't use bleach so don't have any in house but with my record i think i may get some and do same s you keep on bike. this sting is way milder than past but still have a welt more than 2 inches across and it is so itchy! in past they where more sore than itchy.

Bleach eats away your skin. No way i would put bleach on my skin! A little topical or oral benedryl and/or poison ivy salve and/or hydrocortisone is good.

are you always getting stung in the same area? maybe you are coming too close to a hive of bees?

no there is like a 20 mile range where i have been stung. really i think bees are somehow attracted to me. in high school every time we had a picnic they got stuck in my hair! they never stung me though i would be standing there minding my own business and someone would inform me a bee was in my hair. happened so often it became a bit of a joke.

maybe if i get used to being stung enough i will start keeping bees...

honestly this most recent time i laughed it off and then had a miserably itching welt that is almost gone now. when i started this thread the sting in my ear had just happened and that was so scary. going down a steep-ish hill with trucks and cars and traffic with a bee in my ear. really really was scary. but i guess i am feeling more ok with it now.

We have two massive honey bee hives and more yellow jackets and hornets that I can count (fruit trees). I've not been stung on my own property in more than two years and I am outside more than I'm inside most days.

Maybe it is your natural phermones? Or your just have crazy bad luck with the stinging insects!

One of my girls stung me on the upper lip yesterday.
i got them a little annoyed by doing a bunch of chores in the hives.

Now one side of my lip is all swollen up like Octomom, and itchy, but it only actually hurt for about half an hour. Looks pretty funny. I guess I'll live, which is more than I can say for she who stung me.

A skirt is sort of like a large catcher's mitt for bees and hornets.
If you really want to avoid stings, then eliminate openings and flaps where bees can get caught.
