It's a common rule among motorcyclists NOT to carry a phone (or anything hard) on your person, because if you crash, it will hurt you, and then it will break, after which it may have sharp edges that will hurt you some more.

I carry mine in my pocket anyway. I want it accessible if something happens that doesn't involve a crash... and I'm willing to take my chances on the rest of it.
