I'm not saying I think it's for real, only that there's nothing in the story that says to me that the bike wasn't actually stolen - whether it was from Landis or from a neighbor's back yard. Disc brakes alone would make it worth more than $5, and they're also something that would be recognizable to your average non-cycling yokel, since they look just like motorcycle or car brakes.
