I did that once. It turned out ok, if a little heavy.

Box mix, yellow cake, calls for 1/3 cup of butter. I was thinking of other things and put in a whole stick of butter (1/2 cup). If I had intended this cake for my household, I wouldn't even ask about this -- we'd try it and see -- but my intention is to give this cake away.
I'm thinking it's probably okay, just richer-tasting? Maybe a little denser?
Am I right about this? I've made plenty of mistakes in the kitchen before, but this is a new one for me; please help! Thank you!!

Great; thanks, KY! I think with whipped cream and berries instead of icing, a little heavy will likely be okay!
(*whew!*)
Thanks again!
It will be a little richer. And as an added benefit, it will stay "fresh" tasting for longer by not drying out quite as quickly so enjoy the cake on the day and enjoy that leftover slice the next day just as much.
My recipie for muffins (which is essentially a basic white cake mix with flaviourings of choice added) has a range rather than a specific quantity of fats (oil or melted butter) to add. Add a little for a lighter muffin, but tastes best straight from the oven. Add more for muffins that you want to taste as good as fresh baked even the next day.
