Southern TE'ers: tornado outbreak tonight

Dangerous tornado outbreak in Kansas and Oklahoma
May 10, 2010; 2:15 PM

The atmosphere has set into motion a dangerous tornado outbreak in the central and southern Plains. Lives and property in the path of the severe storms and tornadoes will be threatened into tonight.

The most violent thunderstorms, capable of producing extremely large, long-tracking and destructive tornadoes. The first tornadoes are erupting now over western and central Kansas and Oklahoma. The threat area encompasses cities and towns from Wichita, Kan., to Oklahoma City and Fort Sill, Okla.

Extremely dangerous storms will shift eastward during the evening, bearing down on eastern Kansas, northeastern Oklahoma and extreme western parts of Missouri and northwestern Arkansas. This will put Tulsa, Okla., Chanute, Kan., Kansas City, Mo., and Fayetteville, Ark., in danger.

The thunderstorms will also produce hail the size of golf balls or larger, strong wind gusts over 60 mph or higher and flooding downpours.

Luckily none right over us at the moment (we had our scare about 30 min ago), but we should be in the clear for now.
I'm in central OK.

Tri Girl, glad you are ok. Do you have a weather alert radio that you can take with you into a central bathroom or closet? Central OK looks like it's going to get the brunt of this storm. Praying for everyone in the path of this storm.

No weather radio. You'd think I'd have one, but I don't. I put the spare bike helmets in the closet, tho. We don't have an inside room anywhere in our house (everything faces an outside wall). Our neighbor across the street has a huge shelter and has told us we're welcome to use it anytime. We've used it before in emergencies.

Seriously big tornadoes east of us. LOTS of damage. Look out AR and MO.

It's so weird. It just felt like tornadoes today, ya know?

Glad you're o.k., Tri Girl. It got a little crazy up here in Kansas, too. Several tornadoes were reported and there was some damage, some of it about 30 miles from us, but thankfully nobody got hurt. Hope all other TE'rs in the weather path are safe.

OK TE'ers, are you guys ok?? I just logged on to weather.com and the videos of the tornados are 5 were killed in the storm. I pray that you all are safe and that you had minimal damage to your home.

no. the only tornado that was close was about 5 miles away and we were sure it was going to pass. The rest were all south and east of us. Scary stuff. So sad that people died. Breaks my heart...
Comes with the territory, tho. I always say that at least with tornadoes you know they're coming (unlike earthquakes). Just gotta be watchful- and not get too complacent about them.

Deborajen- I saw that you guys were getting hit, too. You had some pretty violent ones up there, too. I'm glad you're OK!

We're all fine! Thanks for asking.

We were in Central Arkansas for the storm outbreak and it didn't even rain there. There was no damage in my town, except for an old tree in my neighbor's yard broke in half. It was due to take a beating anyway.

I'm glad everyone else is safe.

No damage here, either. It was the scariest storm we'd been through in a long time, though. The radar on t.v. was showing a hook echo about 35 miles away that was heading in our direction, and there had been a confirmed tornado on the ground where the hook showed. It was really dark outside and dead calm - really eerie. I ended up taking the dog and the cats to the basement but the tornado disappeared after a few miles and we ended up getting nothing but a brief heavy rain. We got lucky, but then again 30 miles away is like a whole 'nother world where tornadoes are concerned. Midwest storms are wierd like that.

Deborajen, Tuck and Tri--whew! Glad your property didn't suffer any damage and that you are safe and sound. That tri-vortex tornado-- Just think, we have 7 more weeks before the season officially ends. Let's hope the worst is behind us.

As for hurricane season, the forecasters are saying it's going to be much more active than '09.
