Catrin - I would definitely persevere with the drop bars and fit a different shifter to them. I have several bikes - one is a hybrid with really wide handlebars and I find it really restricting compared to my bikes with drop bars.

But when I first rode with drop bars I found it really scary and was going to give up on them - I'm so glad I stuck with it
