Parts and LBS

This may seem an odd question, but it is considered bad form to take parts to an LBS for installation? I have pretty much decided to move to Trekking bars and XT trigger shifters. A friend of mine has a set of unused trigger shifters/brakes that he is going to give to me. Obviously I will be getting other needed parts through the LBS, just wondering if this is unusual. I figure it isn't...

No, not unusual or poor form.

Don't expect the deal on labor (expect to pay the full going rate for labor in your area) that they may or may not have given you had you bought the stuff there, but if they act badly about it they are just shooting themselves in the foot.

Cool, and I would expect that. I don't see this particular store doing that. Thanks - that is pretty much what I expected.

Ditto. I won't *buy* something somewhere else and expect them to install it - but if you're given something - they'll understand that. Just be straightforward about it.

but I wouldn't give up on drop bars so fast...

I'd even buy something really unusual - my crankset, for example, is pretty special - and have the wonderful wrench at my LBS install it. Of course, this winter I spent the equivalent of buying a new bike just puttering around fixing up my old bike. They love me. I spend my disposable income there.

It took a second glance to see the words in pink It isn't so much the drop bars that I am giving up on, but a strong WANT for my beloved trigger shifters

My new fitter is aware of everything, and he is going so far as to check out some of the bars I am looking at prior to my fitting next Thursday so we can figure out what will both give me what I need and what I want. There is a chance that the trekking bars will be too wide and some other solution will be found. Trekking bars are quite wide, and if too much so then might go with some other flat-bar option or keep the drop bars and go with Paul's Thumbies.

Catrin - I would definitely persevere with the drop bars and fit a different shifter to them. I have several bikes - one is a hybrid with really wide handlebars and I find it really restricting compared to my bikes with drop bars.

But when I first rode with drop bars I found it really scary and was going to give up on them - I'm so glad I stuck with it
