This may be a random thing to post here, but...

I am about to graduate from my nurse practitioner program on Saturday and will take the boards this summer (goal is June or July). Obviously, that means I am starting to look for a job. Does anyone know what parts of the country might be looking for acute care nurse practitioners (we work in hospitals and specialty areas as opposed to primary care)? There don't seem to be too many positions where I am, at least for a new grad, which is a bummer as I'd just as soon not have to move. However, I need to find a job in a timely fashion so I am open to going somewhere else if necessary (some places being more desirable than others). Since people here on TE are all over the country, I thought I'd try to pick everyone's brains as to where I might have a good chance of finding something and being selected for the position.

I suppose you could get a job here at UNMH in Albuquerque, NM. Bad pay, poor people, but the sickest patients I ever tried to keep alive. They'll work you into the ground, but you might be up for it, fresh outta school and all! Try it, you might have a flair for it. I dunno.

It seems we are always chronically short in Utah. If you can live with the culture and bad winter air quality (in the Salt Lake, Cache, and Utah valleys at least), the University of Utah healthcare (which includes the hospital that rebuilt my back!) seems to have a lot of need, esp in peds. We also have a Shriner's hospital and regional children's hospital (Intermountain Healthcare).

Thanks for the info. I probably should have mentioned that ACNPs only treat adults (so peds isn't a possibility). As far as the culture and bad winter air quality, can you elaborate a bit on this?

I work with NP's at my job. I work in sort of an express care type of job. We are open 11a 11p every day, we are part of the ER, we just take the simpler stuff. NOT saying we always get the treat and street one's, sometimes we get perfed bowels, PE's, DVT's, etc, that slip thru the triage and into my dept. I have a DNP, NP, and 2 PA's that work, only one of the PA's is full time, the rest are Per-diems. I know in ROchester , they hire NP's, in fact that area is opening up a slew of Urgent cares' and hiring only PA"s and NP's. I can find out more today, as one of the PA's his "friend" just got hired for when they officially open. If your interested, you can PM me, I may not reply until a day or two so don't be alarmed.

Is there a professional society of NPs that you can contact? Sometimes they have job banks or other resources that can help you.

We don't have anything up here, but if you're interested in the west coast, I would bet that the Kaiser or Sutter hospital systems have openings.

Idaho is always in need. In fact, you may qualify to have loans paid off - check out National Health Service Corps loan repayment program.... The largest cities in Idaho are Boise, Pocatello, Idaho Falls, Twin Falls, Moscow, to name a few.
We have the same bad winter weather as Utah - only maybe a longer season by a month or so. If you ski and hike and fish, this area is paradise.
As far as your specific employment needs, I don't know - I just know that we seem to always need NP's

Louisiana is considered an "under-served medically" state - i.e. we don't have enough doctors, so I would surmise that your field is wide open. Could be wrong. If you don't mind the occasional hurricane in the southern part of the state, the culture is great!

Lincoln, Nebraska has a fine rehab hospital - that I happen to work at. (full disclosure & all. . .)

We just opened up a new peds unit and a new transitional care unit, so there are the usual sort of openings when that happens.

Lincoln has a well-established bike culture. Last winter was an exception, but we can bike pretty much year-round, if you don't mind dressing for the weather. The major commuter bike paths are plowed in the winter.

You could do worse.

huh.. I thought that California had a shortage of nurses. Seems like the pay is pretty decent and I think work conditions depends on where you end up, just like any job. Some'll work ya into the ground.. some try to give their employess some balance.

But hey, I'm not in the medical field so I'm not an expert. Just thought that we were always short on nurses here..
