Thank you for posting this. Over here in Tucson and the surrounding area we have too many of these ghost bikes too. Daily I pass 2, one for a 14 year old boy killed by a drunk driver and another for a young police officer riding off duty killed by a woman distracted by her kids while also reaching for her cell phone.

Interesting how people build different shrines. The one for the boy always has flowers and colorful, festive decorations. And decorations are coordinated for holidays. Even St Patricks Day it had lots of shiny green decorations. The one for the police officer has flowers, flag, a simple wooden plaque with the date, recently a small solar light was added. There is also a child's small toy truck. He didn't have children but I can't help and wonder if it was a friend's son who placed it there (you know how kids think, everyone needs a toy) or maybe it was his from his childhood?

Hopefully this shrine will help the family and others deal with these awful tragedies. And hopefully the presence of these ghost bikes will help bring some awareness to motorists of the seriousness of sharing the road.

This is very interesting -- thanks for posting. I am fascinated by the broad appeal of the bike blessing ceremony where I live. People of all faiths (and no faith) participate and find it meaningful. And they include non-motorized scooters, which I like.

I am going to share this with a few friends.
