Hate chip seal, and preroughed asphalt that appears for about 2 months before they actually oil it and lay down the gravel.

I totally get this. I'm likely going to get a cyclocross bike in the next year...in large part because I actually want to do some CX races, but also in large part because I'd like a comfier ride on our roads AND the ability to go down unpaved roads, too.
