I sound like a bike mechanic, and even my more experienced friends don't understand what I am talking about

I understand that feeling. I'm a relatively new rider and had to really look into cranks and gearing to understand what would work for me. By the time I ordered my BikeFriday, I pretty much knew the gearing I wanted on it.
