    Thanks Oakleaf. I remembered there were technical documents on Shimano's web site somewhere.

    Crud... it does look like you need to disassemble the shift lever body from the shift lever bracket. Ugh... that's more work that I wanted to mess with. And this is where I'm really saying I wish I had used my recent REI coupon & dividend for a workstand.
