I don't think you actually need to take the lever off, it doesn't look like it, it's just that that would be a prior step in the procedure if you were disassembling the whole thing. But maybe you do?

Crud... it does look like you need to disassemble the shift lever body from the shift lever bracket. Ugh... that's more work that I wanted to mess with. And this is where I'm really saying I wish I had used my recent REI coupon & dividend for a workstand.
