A good shop will have you run in them on a treadmill, so I'd say you want to be prepared. Maybe not entirely decked out in running gear, but comfortable clothes you can run in the same way you'd run on the street.
You could always call ahead and ask - that might help you decide on a reputable shop, too. Ask them how they fit shoes, what you should bring/wear, get to know them a little?
