Avatar - see it in regular or 3D?

My dear saw it the other day in 3D and mentioned it was just another hollywood film and ok...

I want to see a heap of foreign films : The White Ribbon, Peaceful Times, Five Munutes of heaven, Amreeka, Max Manus

Good Lord! So people outside of Norway do actually notice Norwegian films from time to time! Cool, I always thought it was just the journalists wanting it to be so...

Max Manus is good as a realistic portrayal of a war "hero", also the negative sides. It's also very good on 40's atmosphere. It's pretty tightly connected to Norways experience of the war, som it might be a bit too insiderish for others. Even though I don't like Aksel Hennie much (he's in every other NOrwegian movie and I'm a bit sick of those souldful eyes...) this is one of his better roles.

It wouldn't be my first choice, as I mentioned. I could go my whole life without seeing it. Buuuut, I live in a house full of men and almost-men who love such things, and I would be left out of a lot of conversations and cultural references. So, if they wanted to get it on DVD I'd probably sit and watch it with them again.

However, this movie does not hold their interest and imagination like, say, Star Wars does, or provide just the right stolen line at the right time like, say, Fight Club did. (I haven't seen Fight Club, either, because of the fighting.)

I thought I wanted to see it when the first previews showed up, but have since decided not to bother. It just doesn't look that interesting.

The plot really isn't, but it's engaging enough, and the visuals are truly amazing. It's probably not worth seeing on the small screen. Although 3D TV should be here in a couple of years... so you could wait until then.

But then I got two free tickets to see it in 3D (no Imax).

I liked it. But i found the 3D bonus not that spectacular and the glasses annoyed me. I just wonder if people with glasses or that are blind on one eye can see 3D (or is that a stupid question????).

Still haven't seen Avatar but we did see Sherlock Holmes yesterday because it's raining and raining and raining here (while I do live in Oregon I live on the DRY side so it should be snow . . . dammit). I liked Sherlock Holmes. Yes, there was some violence but both of us thought the film portrayed the original characters much more accurately than Hollywood has managed in the past.

It also appears that a sequel is possible.

Okay....always a day late and a dollar short. Story of my life.

But DH and I just had what could pass as a date night.....dinner and a movie.
We intended to see Avatar in IMAX, but every showing today, except the one at 10:30 this evening, was sold out. So "regular" 3D it was.
I've never seen Pocahontas, but while watching this, all I could think was "OMG...It's "Dances With Wolves" set in the future...not the past."
Think: Wounded soldier, sent to a remote outpost. Sent in among the natives. Learns their ways. Falls in love. Pitched battle against what he used to value.
