Personally, I'd pick a lane with a slower swimmer. I'd start my lap when the other swimmer was most of the way back towards me. That way, you can swim whatever speed you want and not catch that swimmer at the end of your lap (as she will already be starting down the lane on her next lap, while you take a break.)
