Are they using vermiculite (I think that's how you spell it). I never have any problems with smells unless he's done a big poo after shedding his skin.
With the vermiculite you can just lift out the soiled part and replace the lot every few months.
Oops Pax I think the stuff I use is actually Corn Cob. Here's a link with a picture so your friend can see the sort of stuff it is. I buy mine from a local serpentarium.

I hope it helps. When I first got my snake I just used newspaper to line the bottom of the tank and I never had smells with that either. It's a cheap alternative.

Oh okay. I'm not too sharp tonight lol.
No I never handle him for two or three days after feeding him. It lets his meal settle, also if you handle them too quickly they could regurgetate and that can cause future problems with feeding.
