it's good boiled too. That's what it's like out of a can. It's called Saba in Japanese

I've only had saba marinated - which leads me to think that maybe it has a very strong flavor? Never had it cooked or completely raw.

Love love love mackerel salted and grilled, Japanese style. It's called Saba Shioyaki when it's done that way. Yum. It was a favorite of mine when I lived in Japan.

Mackerel is very strongly flavored, much as sardines are. (It doesn't taste like sardines. I'm just trying to give you the idea of how intense the flavor is.)

my boyfriend catches mackerel when he goes sea fishing. I can recognize their unique pattern on their backs anywhere. It was also a pretty steady staple at the aquarium for the fishes.

Saba shioyaki's about the only way I can eat it without gagging, it's a very oily and "heavy" tasting fish.

I've had it prepared "tuna salad" style while in Belize. It was good from what I remember, but I also remember it having a very strong flavor.

My son loves fishing for mackerel. They are so beautiful, and they are extremely energetic so it can get quite exciting. And he happens to like the taste as well, so it's a win-win.

Yup, here he is this summer, with one he just wandered off and caught on the second cast
