Far wiser heads than me will answer that but it refers to the number of teeth on the front cogs (chainrings) and the number of teeth on the rear cogs (cassette/freewheel). The bigger the number on the front, the harder to pedal. The bigger on the rear, the easier to pedal. Help, my brain hurts!!!
