No, they can be painted just about any color....except I do know that bees don't like black or royal blue.
Hives are often painted white because A)If they are sold pre-painted, white is a 'safe', cheap, generic choice....and B) many large commercial apiaries keep their hives out in the fields in full sun and white helps the bees cool their hive in the South in the summer, where they are often placed during the pollinating season of crops.
My hives will be in dappled sun in the northeast here, so they can really be any colors and don't need to be white at all. I actually picked out 3 pretty colors to mix-n-match in the two stacks of hive boxes.

That is so neat. I wonder if the black/blue thing is because it's dark, rather than the color. I may have to do some curious googling.
    I'd love to see pictures.

Oh man. Did they catch the driver? Do you know whether they'll be charged?

Hope your friend heals up quick.

This is where I've been lately in my thinking, on the few days I've been able to commute this summer/fall I've had a near miss almost every day.

So sorry to hear about your friend.

CC, so sorry to hear about your friend! Hope he gets out of the hospital soon.

I am terrified of driving when the sun is low for that very reason. The glare can really be blinding. Polarized sunglasses help, but only so much.

If I am riding during that time of day, I doubly assume that drivers may have trouble seeing me.
