I am 5'6" or so (31" inseam, relatively short torso) and I am on the men's 17.5" frame... so I would think the women's 17 is absolutely too small for you, especially if you have longer legs!

I would have to say though, even though I don't particularly dislike my 7.2fx now that I have made some changes to it, I wish I'd just bought a road bike when I was shopping, even though I didn't have any clue what I was really looking for then... because I absolutely want one now In the price range I am assuming you are looking at, you can get a fairly decent beginner roadie... if you intend to do road riding, or paved bike path riding, you'd probably be happier with that long-term.
