Cars usually aren't in the "line of fire," but other riders often are. Unlike spitting, you'd have to be pretty darn coordinated to shield a snot rocket with your other hand. Just be super aware of who's behind you...

Saturday was discussing this thread with my hubby and 10y/e son. Son was amazed that until now, his Mom had never heard of a snot rocket - he was more than happy to demonstrate.
Fast forward to Sunday, post 1 1/2 hr ride in low-50's weather and I mention failing at snot rockets, getting them all over glove, jacket. Son goes, "You are trying blow them while riding the bike?......that is too cool"
Wonder if this will hit playground talk today.
I don't do snot-rockets either. I have been known to use my buff in times of desperation! What?? No worse than using the back of a glove
I get real throat and chest burn in cold weather, so I chew gum. Don't know why it works, but it does. Maybe because I can't gasp air in while I chew? I don't know, but I don't go anywhere on my bike without gum in winter. Hope you find something that works, it's a horrid thing to suffer.
